Responsibilities
• The purpose of this job is the management of the financial affairs of the company in line with the company strategy, enhance controls and profitability targets for the Company.
• The Chief Accountant is accountable for the timely delivery of operational targets of the department while interfacing with all relevant departments (Sales and marketing, Operations-Engineering & Distribution, and Administration & Human Resources, etc.) to achieve short and long-term scorecard objectives.
• The Chief Accountant is responsible for managing and overseeing the accounting team who currently include: Credit Controller, Accounts Payable Accountant, Accounts Receivable Accountant and Stocks Accountant
Duties and responsibilities
Reporting
• Month-end closure by booking recurring journals, analysis of GLs, and closure of modules by 5th of the subsequent month.
• Preparation of financial statements and reports.
• Reconciliation of bank accounts by 5th of the subsequent month and resolution of outstanding items within 15 days.
• Reconciliation of stocks by 5th of the subsequent month and resolution of outstanding items within 15 days.
• Ensure reconciliation of balance sheet accounts
• Budget
Preparation of budgets and forecasts
• Carryout a budget variance analysis. Control and reviewing all accounting entries to ensure proper booking in line with budget. Analysis of actual income and expenditure against the budget and determining cause of any variation.
Operational day-to-day
• Maintaining the fixed asset register. Liaising with management information system on system analysis and ensuring all asset movements are recorded and register updated on timely manner.
• Ensure compliance with tax laws in Uganda including preparation of tax returns
• Ensure stock control within the company, i.e., stock reconciliations, stock takes, stock gains/losses monitoring.
• Ensure company tax returns (Corporate, VAT, Withholding Tax) are done before set deadline e.g. by 15th of subsequent month.
• Reconciling the daily banking against receipts raised by noon each day, clearing receipts & payments in the system, reporting on the bounced cheques to cashier and credit control for reversal within the same working day.
• Following up and ensure payments to suppliers are done in the Bank and in Oracle on a timely basis within the next working day from time we receive the payment from Financial Controls.
• Carry out account Receivables (account analysis, credit/debit note, communication and staff accounts) and ensure no long outstanding balances.
• Prepare weekly cash utilization report every Friday morning.
• Any other duties assigned by the Supervisor
Qualifications
• Minimum of Bachelor’s degree Education in accounting/finance or equivalent
• ACCA/CPA finalist
Details of experience
• Minimum 4 years post qualification experience with audit background
