In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
Recent graduate (those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.
Any applicant whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.
Duties and Qualifications
Duties
• Assist in monitoring of detention facilities jointly with legal patterns to ascertain minimum human rights standards and UNHCR¿s detention monitoring guidelines are adhered to.
• Assist in providing support to the Legal Assistance staff in monitoring of the legal information sessions across the Five Zones in Bidibidi settlement, attending monthly District Chain Link (DCC) Meetings with the JLOS partners at DCC, Mobile Courts and any other legal activities.
• Assist in boarder monitoring, facilitating trainings organized by partners either International Rescue Committee (IRC), Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) and UNHCR.
• Assist in monitoring and follow-up of cases in protection houses.
• Assist in monitoring and providing guidance to activities for women empowerment undertaken by the protection partners.
• Assist in conducting file reviews and gather all existing information on GBV survivors, their families, and perpetrator and propose assistance for the survivors and families.
• Assist in conducting assessments with GBV survivors and their families according to UNHCR¿s GBV Prevention and Response Guidelines and Action against Gender-Based Violence.
• Assist in Referring survivors of GBV promptly to safe placements, psychosocial support, livelihoods opportunities, and other lifesaving / urgent interventions to ensure their survival and wellbeing.
• Assist in organizing meetings and case conferences for cases that require multi-sectoral responses to find solutions.
• Attend zonal, settlement, and national Sector Working group meetings as necessary.
• Draft concept notes and project proposals for the capacity building of female leaders in the settlement with the support of supervisor.
• Assist in monitoring project implementation to ensure project deliverables are met.
• Draft monthly reports and relevant project documentation with the support of supervisor.
• Perform any other duties as required
Minimum qualifications
Required
Masters degree in social science, preferably in international law, criminology, gender studies or other relevant fields of study
Desired
• Experience working with colleagues and partners with international and diverse backgrounds
• Demonstrated understanding of critical issues around protection and knowledge of data collection and analysis and conducting assessments
• Demonstrated knowledge in gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls and apply, promote and integrate gender analysis into programming.
• Demonstrated knowledge of protection issues related to imprisonment
• Project design and implementation experience
• Proven research skills

Operational Context
The particularity of the operation in Yumbe is about the size of Bidibidi settlement and population under the responsibility of the Sub-Office Yumbe. The settlement is 240 sqkm with a population of over 231,000 South Sudanese refugees. The population is scattered in five zones that geographically are separated. Settling within the Ugandan communities and sharing scarce resources, make peaceful coexistence as an important element of coordination.
The protection environment is diverse with most of the population being women and children. With provision of physical safety and assistance to Persons with specific needs, community mobilization, to enhance cohesion between refugees and host communities, efforts are geared to maintaining peaceful co-existence between refugees and host communities through community dialogues and sports tournaments. SO-Yumbe is one of the pilot schemes for the Regional Youth Peace Building program. Prevention and response to Abuse, neglect and Exploitation against children is also a key component of the protection interventions in Bidibidi with enhanced Best Interest Practices on Best Interest Assessments9BIAs) and Best Interest Determinations (BIDs being conducted for Unaccompanied and Separated Children (UASC) and other children at risk.
Interventions to mitigate, prevent and respond to Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) are achieved through a multi-sectoral approach, conducting safety audit, community engagement, women and girls center are established across the Five Zones and focus is on the SASA methodology in prevention of the GVB. In the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, domestic violence was recorded highest especially intimate partner violence. Evidence based prevention approaches as well as enhanced awareness on Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) and reporting channels. Also, to note is that culture is being the biggest contributing factor to GBV harmful practices against women and girls which makes SASA the most appropriate methodology for behavioral change. Efforts are also being made to achieve gender parity in the leadership structures of Refugee Welfare Committees-RWCs.
Access to justice initiatives is in place for refugees through extensive legal assistance activities such as legal information sessions on National Legislation, detention facility visits, mobile courts and District Chain link meetings for Advocacy to handle bottle necks to access to justices with Justice Law and Order Sector (JLOS) Actors.
Lastly prospects of Durable solutions through resettlement and complementary pathways is part and partial of protection interventions to uphold UNHCR¿s strategic directions to Protect, Respond, promote inclusion and Self-reliance, Empower the people we serve to determine and build their future and pursue solutions to address the consequences of displacement and problems of statelessness.
The opportunity for International Intern will be to learn the protection and specifically GBV aspects in the biggest settlement of refugees in Africa context and contribute his/her effort towards the operational strategies implemented together with 20 protection team members of UNHCR Yumbe Sub Office.
