Uganda Climate Smart Jobs Programme (CSJP)

The Climate Smart Jobs Programme is a UK FCDO (Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office) funded programme aimed at supporting the growth of Ugandan agribusinesses to create at least 130,000 jobs and support 195,000 people in Uganda to better cope with the effects of climate change. This programme will support firms to grow and be immediately more resilient to climate change and reduce their emissions; provide demand-led farming, technical and managerial skills, which currently prevent agribusinesses from taking advantage of the large external demand for agricultural products.

The Role

The role of the Partnerships Facilitator is to work closely with agribusinesses, as well as other market players in the agriculture sector, to identify, develop and maintain productive relations crucial for a transformative and successful commercial agriculture sector. In addition to agro-processesors, this will include working with farmer cooperatives, agriculture input suppliers, buyers, agricultural service providers among others, through structured partnerships that ensure financial growth and job creation. The facilitator will report to the Partnerships Adviser who will oversee a broader portfolio of private sector partnerships (either geographic or value-chain based).

The location of the position is Kampala as the client has the expectation that the project will be managed through a country-based office. Given the prolonged COVID-19 situation, some flexibility on the requirement of being based in Kampala from the beginning of CSJP is foreseen. The project is expected to start in March 2022. We are looking for individuals who have a passion to make a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with agribusinesses and producer organisations to strengthen their market positioning, and to be adaptive and resilient to market changes within a climate friendly approach
  • Build strong linkages and identify opportunities for climate smart engagement with key agricultural market systems actors
  • Work closely with the Partnerships Adviser to ensure successful private sector relationships, oversee individual partnerships with private sector agribusinesses, farmer cooperatives, input suppliers, etc. and deliver or source technical assistance as appropriate; and contribute to the delivery of market systems interventions related to portfolio
  • Collaborate closely with the MREL team to support the monitoring and evaluation of key project metrics, participate in learning activities and reflection sessions, and contribute to writing technical reports and project highlights as needed

  Qualifications:

  • Bachelors or Master's degree in relevant field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience, is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working in agricultural market systems development in Uganda or other African countries
  • Direct experience of working in agricultural businesses, or working closely with them
  • In-depth knowledge of Uganda agriculture, agro-processing, manufacturing, and strong relationships with key actors in the Uganda agriculture market system
  • Familiarity with climate-smart agricultural approaches
  • Strong writing and communications abilities
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure with diverse teams
  • Prior experience with FCDO funded programmes or other donor funded programmes preferred
