Responsibilities and Duties
• Technological Function
• Analysing laboratory tests and interpreting test results.
• Adhering to Professional Code of Conduct and Research Ethics while participating in research laboratory activities.
• Keep records of the study equipment in the lab, organize for their servicing and maintain them in good working conditions.
• Report technical problems, including equipment faults to the appropriate supervisors.
• Evaluate and appropriately communicate test results, compile reports, and make recommendations.
• Ensure that the laboratory activities are performed within the timelines of the research studies
• Advise the Research Study teams on matters regarding laboratory operations.
• Leadership and Coordination Function
• Oversee the planning, mobilization and coordination of all research Laboratory activities.
• Participate in formation of guidelines and SOPs for the research laboratory technologies.
• Participate in formulation of guidelines for biobanking of specimen and drafting of institutional Material Transfer agreements (MTA) where appropriate
• Requisition for laboratory supplies related to the study in consultation with the research projects coordinator
• Managing, tracking and accounting for the allocated laboratory supplies and resources.
• Be the link person between different testing labs and the study and follows up on tests pending at the test labs.
• Be in charge of specimen transfer/referral to the other testing laboratories/Study sites.
• Quality and Safety Function
• Observing safety and quality assurance practices while conducting laboratory procedures.
• Performing and documenting preventive maintenance tasks.
• Keep track of all laboratory incident reports, results that conform to Grade 3, SAE and report to the Study coordinators.
• Supervise the operation of laboratories at the collaborative study sites and make sure tests are being done timely and correctly.
• Upholds the Principles of good laboratory Management practice and ensures that the research studies are adhering to these principles and standards.
• Participates in maintenance of good laboratory accreditation according to the acceptable local and international standards
• Hospital Laboratory and Training Function
• Actively participates in providing essential hospital laboratory testing and analysis services that are accurate, timely and meets client needs.
• Teaches others the proper aspects of laboratory functions including managing the supplies and maintenance of machinery associated with laboratory equipment
• Participates in CME activities as may be organized in and outside of the hospital.
• Trains and orientates Medical Laboratory staff and interns in the performance and interpretation of different tests.
• Ensure effective communication with other disciplines within the hospital to ensure a continuum of patient care.
• Participates in hospital laboratory Quality Improvement Programs including maintenance of equipment, ensuring its proper set up, calibration, and maintenance
• Maintains competence in Laboratory Information System that is crucial to the quality operations of the laboratory and patient care.
• Spiritual Ministry
• Participates in the hospital’s Spiritual Ministry programs.
• Occupation Health and Safety
• All staff are expected to work in such a way that does not cause injury to themselves, other staff members or customers.
• Following & complying with H&S policies, processes & applying them to their own work activities, including using/wearing Personal Protective Equipment as required.
• Participating in activities directed at preventing harm & promoting well-being in the workplace Identifying, reporting & self-managing hazards where appropriate.
• Early and accurate reporting of incidents at work and raising issues of concern when identified.
• Other duties
• Other official related duties that may be assigned by Supervisor.
Job Requirements
• Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology; with additional background training in the either the fields of Laboratory Sciences, Epidemiology, or Molecular Biology.
• Must be registered with the appropriate Health Professionals’ Council
• GCLP, GCP, HSP/RCR training is an added advantage
• At least 2 years of hands on active laboratory experience, especially in a research setting is an added advantage.
• Experience in supervising research laboratory activities is an added advantage.
• Ability to handle or process confidential documents or material in an appropriate manner
• Ability to handle multiple tasks, establish priorities, and work independently
• Computer proficiency
